TriOptimum Research Laboratories
Founded in 1979 with a mandate to work ten years ahead of the divisions, the Laboratories employ 2,140 scientists and engineers in five locations and spent $2.96 billion on research and development in 2025, 7.2 percent of the company’s revenue.
Five laboratories
| Laboratory | Founded | Researchers | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Halsworth Park | 1979 | 820 | Control systems, autonomy, materials, sensing |
| Bengaluru | 2006 | 610 | Software, firmware, verification |
| Leiden | 1991 | 330 | Clinical engineering and biomaterials |
| Houston | 1996 | 240 | Space environments, life support, propulsion |
| Wageningen | 2009 | 140 | Plant science and controlled environments |
Programs
Control and autonomy
The largest program, and the oldest. It develops the control software that runs inside TriOptimum systems, from AccessNet controllers to station-management systems, and the methods we use to verify that software against its specification. Every autonomous system TriOptimum designs is built with an ethical constraint module whose behavior is specified, tested and documented before the system leaves the Laboratories.
Materials
Alloys, ceramics and composites for cutting heads, pressure hulls and implantable devices. The Halsworth materials hall can test samples from minus 196 to 1,650 degrees Celsius and in hard vacuum.
Sensing
Sensors that keep working for twenty years in places nobody wants to visit to replace them: mine faces, reactor halls, the outside of a station.
Biosystems
Closed-loop life support, regenerative medicine and plant science, shared between Leiden, Wageningen and Houston.
Working with others
The Laboratories publish around 300 peer-reviewed papers a year and work with 58 universities. We share operating data with independent researchers where we can, and in 2024 supported the Frothly working paper Load-bearing constraints in station-management systems by giving its authors access to anonymised records from Citadel Station.
